American Military Conducts Deadly Strike in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American military executed a fatal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
